As I’m speaking at #smm11 all day I’m preparing this post a few hours before the news goes live that MarketWire Sysomos is preparing what it believes to be the first fully functional social media analytics around Google Plus. While platforms such as Alterian SM2 have been reporting on plus.google.com urls for the last 3 weeks (mostly content that is shared in Google, such as Google Reader stories), Sysomos offering is more comprehensive, includes sentiment and text analytics.
Naturally, once I get a chance to play with the new Google Plus functionality in Sysomos, I’ll write a post or two on it. Meanwhile, here’s more about the announcement of this new feature in Sysomos.
…
….
The Buzz Graph is Sysomos logical word map and while that has been available for twitter, blogs, forums, mainstream news, this is the first time it is also being used for Google Plus. …. ….
According to Sheldon Levine, the community manager at Marketwire Sysomos -
“….MAP users can now search out key public conversations that pertain to them in the Google+ network. These searches can also be done using boolean operators so that you can find the conversations that matter most and cut through the noise. Sysomos is so far the first and only monitoring and analytics company to allow brands to do this.”
“…Not only will MAP users now be able to search out public conversations on Google+, but Sysomos is also bringing it’s industry leading analytics to the party. Users will be able to view a buzzgraph, which shows how words are being used and connected to the search term(s), for their searches. As well, we’re also very proud to say that our industry leading sentiment analysis will be applied to Google+ just as we do with other social networks we cover.
Positive and negative sentiment is being applied to the Google Plus verbatim as well (as shown below) – this is the same approach as is being used for Facebook page posts that I covered yesterday.
I just checked and I am already able to see Google Plus activated in my account at Sysomos – so it will be fun to write about it more in a day or two.
Social Footprint – Sysomos MAP and Heartbeat were upgraded to include a feature that is somewhat similar to what Radian6 had for about 3 years – though Sysomos’s implementation might be a little better. Interestingly enough, for both Sysomos and Radian6, it’s not clear how to export the footprint from either system (my guess is the data is stored in separate database, that’s why).
And if you look at the Radian6 Social Profile for a similar such site you get this:
What I’ve seen in many of the Listening Platforms is a “great equalizing” effect, where most of the platforms are catching up to each other and offering similar functionality (which may also make them more of a commodity, ironically). When Radian6 offered the Insights platform, they got demographics and text Analytics capabilities on par with what Sysomos has, and now Sysomos just went out and did an improved version of the Social Profile.
Overall Sentiment and Overall Geography - Previously, Sysomos provided only a channel view of these metrics, but now there is a consolidated view of them and there’s more in the post from Sysomos I quoted above.
I think these are subtle improvements that help reporting, a gradual improvement of Sysomos platform that continues to grow up and add new features on a regular basis – in other words, the platform is being actively developed, still (and the acquisition by MarketWire doesn’t seem to have interfered with this process of constant improvement).

Noticed something new in Sysomos MAP (Sysomos appears to be adding new features fairly regularly though I did not find a blog post yet dedicated just to Reach) called Reach; the feature appears to be available for Twitter, News and Forum reporting, but not blogs, Facebook or Videos (at least, not yet).
Thought I’d try out the new features using a harmess query- what could be the reach of that over the last 6 months?
“social media analytics” AND (book OR “McGraw Hill” OR “marshall sponder” OR socialmediaanalyticsbook OR webmetricsguru)
Here’s what Sysomos MAP reports back for Twitter Reach
According to Sysomos
“Each is calculated as the total number of times the matching tweet reached a user. This is the sum of number of followers for each unique poster of the tweet.
The authority breakdown pie-chart shows the fraction of twitter within ordinary, prominent or influential category who posted a matching tweet. The three categories are defined based on the authority level of the author.
The exposure pie-chart shows the distribution of number of times a matching tweet was seen by the user.
With News Sites its actually more like the “Reach” of a story online from the looks of it:
And with Forums/Message Boards the report takes a little longer to calculate – but will also report Reach Metrics.
Would be nice to see a long blog post from Sysomos going into these new features (hint, hint) though I have seen traces of the new reports in the last few posts on Sysomos Blog.
Obviously, the audience for Social Media Analytics is going to be more niche (though, who knows…) and one could .. almost play with the query to experiement with what would “widen up” the audience without losing or cheapening the message. I’m not going to try to do that today – all I wanted to do is share this new feature which I’m pretty sure wasn’t there more than a few weeks (at leastI didn’t notice it the last few times I was playing with Sysomos MAP).
Thoughts? Pretty nice feature … right? Anything that could be added to make it even better?
Also would be nice is we understand for all of the channels where Reach reporting is enabled – how is it calculated. The reports draw on Authority level, a metrics Sysomos has been reporting on from the beginning, but past that – what is the calculations ussed for each channel?
Happy when I find new features like this … Reach .. in Sysomos MAP, something most other platfroms I work with do not have as a report. Interesting.
