Iran Mainstream Media Coverage and the Fifth Estate

You know, I don’t understand Middle East Politics and especially, Iranian Politics – don’t pretend to – but it’s not hard to believe the election in Iran that happened this Friday was rigged (2000 and 2004 Presidential Elections in the US were widely believed to be rigged, as well, so don’t say it can’t happen here).

When I was in Graduate School studying Communications, back in the day, it was widely acknowledged Mainstream Media was the Fourth Estate, that was in the late 1980′s – what is the News media today?  the mouth piece of Government?   If that’s the case, what’s Social Media – the Firth Estate? That which won’t be controlled by the other 4 Estates?    I don’t know – but look at this – just look, tell me what you think.

Mainstream Media

Fox News
CBS
CNN

To me, what this says is that Social Media and those who participate in it, show a great deal more interest in Iran than what Main Stream media does.  I would have thought CBS would show more interest, but then again, is the News Media really independent?

In fact, the only media that is really independent, transparent and perhaps, accurate, despite bias, is Social Media, or what I’m calling, the Fifth Estate.  A lot more could be written about this, I’ve just touched the surface – be interesting to see other jump in with additional analysis.

Social Media is the Firth Estate.
