YouTube overtakes MySpace - says Alexa

The problem with Alexa stats is they’re not that accurate, not precise; you can’t go to the bank with any number you can pull out of Alexa.  Yet, the Guardian has just run a story, based on just Alexa data, that says YouTube overtakes MySpace.

The video sharing site has taken a 3.9% share of global Internet visits a day compared with 3.35% for MySpace, according to Internet analysis company Alexa.

I have nothing against Alexa data - it’s better than nothing and sometimes it’s all we have to work with - but I would hardly compare the quality of Alexa’s data to what HitWise produces.

Hitwise is going around making announcements about this and that and pull the numbers to prove it out of their database.  Nothing wrong with that as their database has a lot more information than what Alexa typically collects.
