Online Quizzes can promote Engagement

Next week I'll be at Virtual Worlds 2008 and Blogger Social 08 - between Thursday and Sunday - and I have have yet to really study the materials for Blogger Social 08 (there's 3 packets of information).

But I really like the online quiz I took today - and think there's potential in setting up more of these - I actually found out a few details about people I'll meet that I didn't know (IE: that Crayon PR is going to have 3 people at Blogger Social).

Here's the online quiz about Blogger Social 08, in case your interested in taking it yourself. I think another quiz built for Virtual Words 2008 would have been good to have also.

Think Facebook Newsfeed, the basic format of <a href="http://friendfeed.com/marshallk">FriendFeed</a>, or the kinds of update chronicles we're seeing now on almost every social network around the web. People are taking actions and publishing content on a wide variety of websites these days; pulling all that data together, with a variety of different permission levels for viewing and different types of data, is much easier said than done. Just like a standard size of railroad track helped the trains get across the US like they had never done before (thus opening a new era of commerce and communication) so to do all these social media signals need some common format standards to travel from one website to another. The hot debates were how to handle media files in activity feed streams and some tension between the big, more proprietary social networks like Facebook and the small, radically open projects like <a href="http://diso-project.org/">DiSo</a>, the Distributed Social Networking Project. Any disagreement aside, though, we find it pretty remarkable that all these heavy hitters are sitting at the same table, along with a variety of small startups, to talk about the future of online community and conversation in the form of activity streams. <a href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/having_conquered_flickr_and_th.php">Activity streams are already a big deal</a>, but if these conversations can be fruitful, the results will be as big as the point in history when customers of different email providers became able to email each other or different telephone company customers became able to call each others' phones. As cloud computing companies are starting to offer a relatively standard set of features and uptime guarantees, user-friendly interfaces are clearly a way for service providers like Amazon to differentiate themselves from the competition. While you can choose from a bewildering array of community-created instances (think custom Ubuntu mail servers), Amazon will present you with a sane amount of 'quick start' instances and relatively conservative security settings. Amazon also created a <a href="http://media.amazonwebservices.com/console/AwsConsole.html">great screencast</a> that walks you through creating your first EC2 instance. While using Amazon's web services was already pretty manageable thanks to tools like <a href="http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/connect/entry.jspa?externalID=609&categoryID=88">Elasticfox</a>, this new console gives users an easy way to control their instances, while also allowing new users to start using EC2 without too much hassle.
