A friend videotaped my session at Monitoring Social Media 2010 Boston last week which was well received but also struck a somber note (see bottom of post) as many were perceiving, from the overall conference material, that Monitoring Social Media is not easy to do well (and many wanted something easier to work with).
I also refer to the Compete.com paper on Spectrum Analytics which I presented at the conference (see below).
Everyone is so focused on tools instead of solid business strategy first. Never a conf where someone doesn’t ask what tool to use. #MSM10
Lauren, this was a conference about Monitoring tools, not about marketing strategy (though there is a place for it); we can’t be everything to everyone all the time (you have to choose what to focus on).
But I need to get better as a speaker, still not there yet! On the other hand, I had a hard, deep topic to talk to and one that is not easy to translate. On the last point, people want to do this on the cheap, and maybe they can, it depends on how much planning you do before hand, not everything requires rocket science.
And here was my presentation; I made notes which I tried to read and found that the effort to do that might have taken away from actually coming up with the best presentation merged with the best delivery. But I always say . .. it’s all about the content.
