Nice article as always, Marshall :)
I know Synthesio is difficult to test in the same way you can test social media monitoring tools that are purely tools, but I'll be in touch to share you the new ways Synthesio is identifying influencers ;)

Take care,
Michelle @Synthesio

Valuable information, Marshall!

I'm very grateful to have you doing the leg-work. I would never have the time or ambition to tackle a project like this one.

Great post again, Marshall! As always, a very reliable, independent and relevant source of social media information! Enjoyed your impromptu talk at Montiroing Social Media '09 last year in London... are you in London to talk at another seminar? Would be interested in hearing what you have to say.

Nice and thorough writeup, as always. One other thing that can help you identify influencers via the Biz360 Community tool, is the "Top Sources" report, in addition to the "Top Authors" report. A blog can be written by several people, so it will pick up destinations like Mashable. At the same time, many bloggers don't change their name from Admin to their names. I would definitely recommend looking at both lists.

Hi Marshall,

Nice post. Since you mentioned Kl out, I am surprised that Twitalyzer was not also brought up. As you know, it was developed by a fellow web analytics consultant, in Eric Peterson, and the features and functionality reflect an analytic approach to trying to solve some difficult business problems.

In addition to tracking Influence, Twitalyzer measures Impact as well as a dozen other metrics. You can set Goals, segment data, create tags to associate you or others by specific attributes, understand sentiment analysis. Oh yeah, it is also has an integration with Google Analytics so organizations can see what Twitter accounts are coming to their site and combines Twitalyzer data with site-side data.

Here is an example: http://www.twitalyzer.com/list.asp?v=webmetricsguru&t=smwnyc

Yes, we do not monitor other sources other than Twitter at the moment, but I, along with our thousands of users, believe it is a powerful tool to gauge ones impact and influence in social media

nice work again Marshall - this kind of side by side stuff should be really useful for users/buyers.

You're right about Brandwatch by the way - so far we haven't built an influencer analysis component into the system - it's something on the roadmap, but it's a tricky subject so we want to take the time to get it right.

So at the moment, I would agree with your conclusion that other tools are definitely better

looking forward to your next one..
