How do you communicate with friends?
I’m at the 3LD Conference Center for Jeff Pulver‘s first Social Communications Conference.
You need to be vurnable and be able to share something of one’s self. Jeff talked about his start as a Ham Radio Operator, and be learned about Social Communications that way.
In fact, the way Jeff Pulver looks at Social Media was shaped by his background in radio communications. That got Jeff to think about personal taglines, and stating on the edge of new media and communications.
How do you communicate with your friends? (email, cell phones, Skype, face to face, Facebook, AIM)?
What about 5 years from now? How will you communicate with your friends then?
Jeff’s son could live without email but not without Facebook. We’re living in a flat world with Social TV upcoming, and Facebook.
David Kirkpatrick talks about Facebook and the 10 reasons why Facebook is so important.
1. Founder has absolute control over the company.
2. Identity management
3. Just a place for stuff (Facebook is a repository)
4. Luck and the ability to recognize luck and grasp it (going to Harvard and focusing on universities, and timing, plus investment partners such as Sean Parker
5. Sean Parker created the corporate culture, then left.
6. Facebook Platform is a work of art ( my words); Facebook Connect and the News Feed. As more sites vie for positioning in your news feed, Facebook will become
7. Constant Iteration
8. Simplicty of user interface (uncluttered)
9. Privacy features are a massive reason for it’s dominane.
10. Network Effects – the more people use Facebook the better it gets.
What could go wrong?
1. Anyone can have their privacy violated, big lawsuit waiting to happen.
2. Google and Sonico which is an up and coming Social Network.
There’s a lot of interesting thoughts about changing behavior by creating this neat social networking platform.
David thinks that any tags that are putting onto you, you should be able to approve first (but wouldn’t that slow down the instantaneous nature of Social Networking?).
Fred Wilson is up next and he twitteded and blogged about it before coming. DBC Pierre
9/11 – what is the truth (media vs. What people believe). We are in an era of sharing information. Everyone has their own truth.
What’s playing on KROCK? Red Hot Chile Peppers songs from 16 years old. Radio Industry has let us down and you can find new media by Twitter, Blogs and Social Networks.
The Grammy’s expressed a truth hardly anyone agreed with.
What are our friends watching? Sharing leads to Truth. But we all have vested interests, and objectivism leads to nothingness.
The shared Truth is more important.
However, questions from the audience suggest that there ‘s not one truth or view and we need to have the tools to find our own Truths.
And …. These Truths can coexist.
