I was at Gary Vaynerchuk’s Park Avenue Motivational Discussion tonight and took my own footage (I also appear in several frames in the video, below) which is being updated to YouTube right now - along with some additional video I hope you’ll enjoy - but for now, here’s CenterNetwork’s footage.

I think I’ll be ready to post my movies of this event on Thursday, at some point.

Think Facebook Newsfeed, the basic format of <a href="http://friendfeed.com/marshallk">FriendFeed</a>, or the kinds of update chronicles we're seeing now on almost every social network around the web. People are taking actions and publishing content on a wide variety of websites these days; pulling all that data together, with a variety of different permission levels for viewing and different types of data, is much easier said than done. Just like a standard size of railroad track helped the trains get across the US like they had never done before (thus opening a new era of commerce and communication) so to do all these social media signals need some common format standards to travel from one website to another. The hot debates were how to handle media files in activity feed streams and some tension between the big, more proprietary social networks like Facebook and the small, radically open projects like <a href="http://diso-project.org/">DiSo</a>, the Distributed Social Networking Project. Any disagreement aside, though, we find it pretty remarkable that all these heavy hitters are sitting at the same table, along with a variety of small startups, to talk about the future of online community and conversation in the form of activity streams. <a href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/having_conquered_flickr_and_th.php">Activity streams are already a big deal</a>, but if these conversations can be fruitful, the results will be as big as the point in history when customers of different email providers became able to email each other or different telephone company customers became able to call each others' phones. Unlike those historic transformations, though, much of the planning for this one is being done out in the open. <img alt="amazon-logo.png" src="http://www.readwriteweb.com/images/amazon-logo.png">Amazon today <a href="http://aws.typepad.com/aws/2009/01/manage-amazon-ec2-with-new-webbased-console.html">announced</a> its new web-based <a href="https://console.aws.amazon.com/">AWS Management Console</a>, which makes it very easy for users of Amazon <a href="http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/">EC2 cloud computing </a>service to set up and manage their servers. As cloud computing companies are starting to offer a relatively standard set of features and uptime guarantees, user-friendly interfaces are clearly a way for service providers like Amazon to differentiate themselves from the competition. Currently, you can only manage your EC2 instances through the new console, but over time, Amazon will give users the ability to mange other AWS services like its <a href="http://aws.amazon.com/s3/">S3</a> storage service. <img alt="ec2_aws_management_console.png" src="http://www.readwriteweb.com/images/ec2_aws_management_console.png"> <h2>Ease of Use</h2> The new console makes it especially easy for first-time users to set up their instances on EC2. While you can choose from a bewildering array of community-created instances (think custom Ubuntu mail servers), Amazon will present you with a sane amount of 'quick start' instances and relatively conservative security settings. Amazon also created a <a href="http://media.amazonwebservices.com/console/AwsConsole.html">great screencast</a> that walks you through creating your first EC2 instance. While using Amazon's web services was already pretty manageable thanks to tools like <a href="http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/connect/entry.jspa?externalID=609&categoryID=88">Elasticfox</a>, this new console gives users an easy way to control their instances, while also allowing new users to start using EC2 without too much hassle.
