Stress of Blogging - New York Times

Posted by Marshall on January 07, 2008 | Link It

Thanks to a Twitter Tip from blogger friend Valeria Maltoni I read a New York Times article about Some Brand-Name Bloggers Say Stress of Posting Is a Hazard to Their Health and the article bring up a valid point - a well known blogger becomes, in certain circles, a well known brand, perhaps a Micro Celebrity.

I don't know Om Malik personally, I missed two chances were I could have potentially met him last year, once in September in NYC at a NewTeeVee opening in Chelsea which he didn't show up for and the other, at LeWeb3 in Paris last month, where I was distracted and late to show up when he was speaking and missed seeing him afterwards.

Many of the bloggers I've been around live lives that are sorta like an executive/movie star - and that's a lot of pressure to live with - but it also feels real good to be in the center of what's happening.

Still, a lot of people who blog, unlike Om Malik, might have some level of Micro Celebrity, but not much else, as for the most part, there's not much money in blogging for most people.

I find myself blogging, almost compulsively, sometimes staying up way too late - missing sleep because I'd rather blog - or need to.  Blogging, for me is almost like an emotional release and a creative act - but it's also a job, and there is pressure involved.

So, I don't know if Om Malik's problems were in some way contributed to by his blogging - or if it was his lifestyle - or if his blogging is his lifestyle - and that caused his heart attack - but article reminds us that it's important to take a break - both from compulsive blogging - and, perhaps, from some of the unhealthy habits (which may, or may not be supporting why one blogs in the first place).

Is blogging hazardous to your health?  Marshall Sponder of Web Metrics Guru says he sometimes blogs compulsively and I have to admit that I may have blogaholic tendencies. However, this is what I do for a living and I happen…
