Top 20 (bookmarking sites, that is)

Excellent post by Liz Camps of BigGreenBlog on the Top 20 Social Bookmarking Sites with Digg on the top:

"…No surprise, Digg comes out on top, with a 100% growth rate every few months. Digg's users post links mostly to news stories on technology, web culture, pop/youth culture, gaming, and occasionally, retail. It is a rabid fan community, supported also by an excellent podcast (in my opinion) called DiggNation."

Sometimes, I post to BigGreenBlog, and Liz has been telling me for quite some time now that she listens to DiggNation pretty much, every day.

Actually, if I make to LeWeb3 next month (re: Invited to cover LeWeb3 07 in Paris next month)- I'll get to talk with Digg founder Kevin Rose (I'll make that conversation happen - probably mention the work the Social Media Committee of the WAA is involved in, etc).

Turns out Sebastian Wenzel of www.WebAnalyticsBook.com has also been invited to cover LeWeb3 also - which could make it alot easier for me to go (if he ends up going) - since finances are a bit tight for me now - but I'd hate to pass this trip to LeWeb3 07 up.

Anyway, getting back to Social Bookmarking - Liz Camps points out that Social Bookmarking is very important to your overall traffic and perhaps, search rankings:

"…Who should care about social bookmarking? You should, if you care about boosting your rank in natural search (Search Engine Optimization). Many of these bookmarking sites contribute to your Link Popularity, an important factor in SEO. The more people who link to your site, generally the higher you can gain rank in the search engines, all else being equal. "

Also, in an interesting, but unrelated note, Liz Camps is working with other on the Social Media Committee of the Web Analytics Association to create Social Media Standards for Social Bookmarking.   We're aiming on having a draft of our first set of Social Media Standards ready to release early next year - but a lot depends on how quickly we can draft standards and get agreement, before presenting our draft to the Board of Directors of the Web Analytics Association that I sit on.
