Catching up on some news from earlier this week at Ad-Tech, Facebook ads will now target your friends based on your profile according to a post on CrunchGear.
"..For example, going forward, a Facebook user who rents a movie on Blockbuster.com will be asked if he would like to have his movie choice broadcast out to all his friends on Facebook. And those friends would have no choice but to receive that movie message, along with an ad from Blockbuster. "
For the most part, this will just add to the saturation of advertising we're getting, more and more of, all the time. On the other hand, there's some value in knowing the viewing habits of my own friend / network, whom I respect (provided they really are my friends and not just pseudo social network friends.
Ok, so if there are some people who I'm fairly comfortable calling my friends both in the 3D face to face world and in the 2D Facebook environment - there's value in knowing that my friend rents a video from BlockBuster.com so I can have a dialog about it with them, or maybe rent it myself.
But I'm not sure of the value of such advertising beyond the case I cite - I think we'll need to watch Social Advertising as implemented by Facebook and check back in 3-6 months, when more is known about how Social Advertising performs.
