Guzzling it up with Google at the Gas Pump

I understand that Google is now working on POS systems, kinda like a cash register, but instead, it’s a gas pump and instead of money, information is pouring out of the pump, according to Bill Sobel at ny:mieg in Filler Up with Google

The Google Gas Pump information system (not kidding – though I don’t know what it’s actually called) uses Gilbarco’s new Applause media system that  serves Google’s local search, maps and local listings, driving directions, coupons and more.

According to the Press Release that Bill Sobel quotes in his post:

“…Applause™ is an extension of Gilbarco’s existing SMART Merchandising™ System for providing promotions, advertisements, and coupons at the fuel dispenser. Current users of the SMART Merchandising system will be able to easily migrate to the enhanced functionality available from Applause™ media system.”

I could read this to mean that Google is experimenting with extending their reach beyond the laptop, desktop and mobile devices and onto POS like systems like Gas Pumps and Gas Stations.

Maybe the next stop is Restaurants (assuming we’d be able to search on the information on all the foods we’re being served while looking at local advertising) – I guess if that happens, we’ll also be able to use the search engine in exchange for giving our attention.
