Yahoo! Mash(ed) ..Potatoes

Look.. yet another Social Network…. Yahoo Invites Us Into Mash, Its New Social Network…right Yahoo Mashed Potatoes (TechCrunch).

Look, everyone has to start a social network (including the Web Analytics Association … we're looking into it too - but hopefully, ours will be invite only, at least, initially..but those details are still being worked out) …Social Networks that include everyone …… aren't that much fun anymore because friendship has become meaningless because it's "too easy" to be someone's friend.  I don't think it's too much to say that Social Networks have made being someone's friend..boring.

In fact, Yahoo! Mash was so boring it probably sent Lee Odden to sleep…he knows when he wakes up he'll have a ton more Yahoo! Mash friends….how much more boring can it get?

"….More later as it’s late night on Friday and I need sleep. In the meantime, Techcrunch has a write up."

"…Here’s a screen shot of my Yahoo mash beta account. By the time someone reads this there will be a LOT more “friends” listed.

Ok, the ability to have other friends update your own profile may/may not be a killer app, but it's so easy to copy a feature like that, even if it is intersting - every other social network will have it within a couple of months if it proves popular.  According to TechCrunch:

"…Users are encouraged to edit each other’s pages. Each time we visit our profile page, we are seeing new modules that others have loaded for us. This capability certainly adds to the “mashing” aspect of the social network. It is also appears as though Yahoo intends for users to mash their information together from across the company’s various properties, perhaps making Mash the main hub for Yahoo users."

And what's interesting, from a commenting point of view, everyone who likes Mash, so far, is entering a one liner…almost as if the comments are being paid for, while those who don't like it are writing a paragraph, which is less likely to scripted.  Here's a couple of the one liners:

"…Actually, I just got in and its way more awesome than I thought it was going to be." September 14th, 2007 at 4:58 pm

"…It’s a lot more fun then I expected." September 14th, 2007 at 10:42 pm

"…I love Mash. It is definitely Web 3.0. As revolutionary as my invention of teh Internet." September 15th, 2007 at 9:33 am

Ok, the last one was a spoof by "Al Gore".   Someone even said if you had friends, than Yahoo Mash would be revolutionary.   But the point is.. people are already so full of Social Networks, that it takes an awful lot to be the next kid on the block that is going to become Facebook.

The bar keeps being raised higher and even allowing people to edit my own page might not be enough for me, or most others.  But time will tell.  Meanwhile, I bet Lee Odden woke up and has a ton more friends - wonder what they did to his profile on Mash?
