New line of Have's and Have Not's – the iPhone is here

Posted by Marshall Sponder on June 29, 2007 | Link It

I predict the iPhone will be the top story of 2007 and with all the hype going on, before long it will be the must have mobile device for anyone who thinks they are anyone.

But I don't have one yet (and did not get offered an iPhone for testing -as several bloggers and journalists have).

"…CrunchGear even caught blogger Robert Scoble, second in line only to his son, looking to trade in his $750 N95 3G 5MP camera phone for the $600 2MP camera edge-only iPhone. He was joined by Zoomr CEO Thomas Hawk and founder Kristopher Tate, who were running crowd control by handing out numbered tags. They were later joined from Diggnation’s Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht, who were also covering the controlled chaos.

You can see live coverage of the iLines on Ustream and Justin.tv. They’ll all be waiting in line until the iPhone goes on sale today, June 29, at 6:00 p.m."

With so many people waiting in line today (that's just the beginning) who are going to own and use the iPhone – and I have to believe that many, including me, are going to have to end up owning it - that a fundamental change in how people use mobile devices is about to happen – is happening - and what's possible to do on mobile devices (and how easy or seamless mobile devices are to operate) is about to change forever.

Blog Success is about highly engaged differentiated audiences who want to talk to you – not numbers of pageviews

Posted by Marshall Sponder on June 29, 2007 | Link It

Just a brief note about a CNET News post about Blog Success - Blog Success is about  highly engaged differentiated audiences who want to talk to you – not numbers of pageviews.

"…a small sheet-metal company that doubled its profits once it started publishing a blog about its employees and their passion for sheet metal, as an example of this type of successful segmentation phenomenon in a global economy."

"…An online publication of national reputation can post a story these days and get a disappointing 50,000 hits, while a blog on the same topic can get 250,000. That's something publishers have to look at, Red Herring CEO Alex Vieux told CNET News.com."

My feeling is that blog success is best measured in RSS Subscribers that keep growing.,that's what I've been doing.  According to the CNet post:

"…in order for a blog to successfully gain and keep a following, the writer needs to have an edge and a consistency in his or her voice and opinions, among other skills, said Vieux."

So you have to post enough, often enough, with enough passion and knowledge – to build an audience who will engage with your content, and, your blog.

Using Feedamass to pull in external data to Second Life

Posted by Marshall Sponder on June 29, 2007 | Link It

I was looking at a nice (if too long) video on using an scripted service in Second Life that can query an external database (like Wikipedia) and return an answer; I read about his on Networked Performance.

But why limit it to Wikipedia?  Why not pull out any bit of data you want from any service that can stream it.  You could even pull Web Analytics Data like that (IE: have a collection process and then feed in data on objects your looking at in Second Life).
