Platforms and Technologies

Posted by Marshall on March 28, 2007 | Link It

This session will examine the new technologies and platforms. Speakers will discuss the alternatives that are available for the various platforms. The virtual worlds medium offers unique complexities including interactivity, immersion, scalability and intense user involvement.  New technologies now leverage those elements. New and emerging platforms will also be discussed.

Corey Bridges - Multiverse – Bill Terpin -  This is the very start of the mainstream of Virtual Worlds.

Platform and technology available to anyone – our business model is that anyone can download our technology and build a virtual world .

Where we’re at – the tools are not so easy to use right now – pipelines developed by engineers for engineers with a lack of easy to use GUI’s.  We need to develop toolsets designed for quick prototyping and rapid iteration with 1:1 workflow that minimizes recompiling.

Also end user based.

A user brought up a question on where we’re at in the industry right now – and since big companies adopting it like MTV is very promising.

John Bates from EntropiaUniverse.com who I interviewed last night:  Entropia is based on being a collenist populating a new world.  We have 600,000 registered user and a real cash economy – and the platform has built from the ground up for ecommerce and we think it’s more secure with bank.  We have a lot of things that others are promising today.

-          Art that can be purchased in EntropiaUniverse.com and also sent to you in real life for a little more money.

-          Commerce that is fully enabled.  It’s easy to put your money in and get it out.

Joe Miller – Community, User Created Content, Create a permanent presence in the 3D Internet

Nature of Employee and Employers is changing due to Second Life.  What is Second Life like?  It’s just like First Life but you can fly.

Where are we at

Average age is 33 years old and 60% of our active user base is from outside the US.  Collaborative Creativity is the killer app.  We have a browser that talks to 8300 simulators running.  A simulator today are trusted, running in multiple locations around the country.  Very soon we’ll be able to running multiple versions of the simulators so we won’t have to bring the grid down every Wednesday as we do today.

We recognize that SL can not really succeed without multiple companies controlling the grid.

However, having a lot of User Generated content can be a problem as a lot of users might not want to wade though it to get to what they want.

Note: the same question I asked John last night about money laundering in 3D Virtual Worlds – that EntrpoiaUniverse.com has many safeguards against that but the US Congress is not going to treat, we think, Second Life like they treated Online Poker.
