Howard Rheingold who created the popular SmartMobs.com blog, that I also contribute to, mentioned to me the just released Future of the Internet II Pew Study as a topic worth writing about. I decided the Pew Study is also a good topic for WebMetricsGuru though others have already written about it, including Lee Odden at Top Rank Blog. I find Lee Odden’s posts some of the best I read. I’ll try to add something new in this post - something that had not been said by anyone else.
If you imagine a line from 2006 ————-> 2020 and what life is like now vs. what it will be like in 2020, most of the Future of the Internet II Pew Study sounds like it could happen. On the other hand, the Pew Study did not even deal with Net Neutrality
I also imagined the finding that a counter culture of people who withdraw from the Internet to remind me of the Hippies in 1960, but I don’t think your going to find 15% or 20% of the population dropping off the Net anytime soon, and I don’t think they’ll want to do it in 2020 either.
In fact, as the web continues to improve, it will be harder and harder to drop off the "grid".
