David Nevue - a Mogul of New Media

I won’t say I know a lot about David Nevue, I don’t.  I just got an email from him today saying he’s going to be in my area soon (in December) and to come and listen to one of his concerts.

"The reason you are receiving this email is that I am scheduled to
come play a concert close to your state in early December.
However, in order to make my trip financially beneficial, I’m
looking for additional opportunities to share my piano music
while I’m in your area. "

"How can you help?

I would LOVE the chance to come and play a concert for your
church, college, event, benefit, or even a HOUSE CONCERT if you
have a piano. Imagine how great it would be to invite all your
family and friends for an intimate piano concert at your home!
For house concerts, all I ask is a suggested donation of $10 per
person (they can pay at the door). That helps to cover my travel
costs. Don’t be shy! If you have the room, think you can bring in
20-30 guests, and have a decent piano in good tune and working
order, I’d be happy to come if we can work out the time and date.
Lets work together to create a memorable evening of music and fun
for your guests!"

The Wall Street Journal described David Nevue as a "Popular Amateur Web Radio Broadcaster" and the most listened to amateur broadcaster on Live365, which provides an opportunity for people to play their music online.  Mr. Nevue, who features both is own atmospheric piano compositions and those of other pianists on his show, "Whisperings." has racked up more than 800,000 "listening hours".

My first contact with David Nevue was in 2002-2003, when I bought a Music Marketing  ebook from him for my Music Marketing on the Internet course at Baruch College with Beth Krakower.  (Beth Krakower is the founder of CineMedia Promotions, a marketing and promotions firm that specializes in niche recordings. She has over 12 years of experience in the music business. She promotes most genres of music. She is also the director of Film Network NY and serves on the advisory board of Dartmouth Broadcasting).

I was part of an effort to get enough students to sign up so Beth could give the course for (I think) the first time (but I’m not 100% sure of that).  I was trying to learn how to do music marketing of musicians and painters on the internet - something I can do now - but was just learning about it in 2002/2003.

I think I got something out of the course but it was not exactly what I thought I was going to get (most of what you learn in life that’s valuable - you learn by doing and making mistakes - and a course is not going to give you much hands on experience - and that’s what was needed here).   Still, I’m glad I took Beth’s course.

Nevue’s ebook was the textbook Beth Krakower decided she had to use - because it was the best book at the time.

What I find really smart about David Nevue’s email to me - he kept a database and remembered to use it - just like a smart marketer should.  Contrast that to my post of many of the songwriters who I listened to at the Bitter End a couple of months ago. My internet research showed most were not known much beyond the circles where they were well accepted.

It almost seemed the songwriters I met accepted that fate - thinking they are songwriters and the people behind the stars they really support.    I do not try to dissude someone if that’s what they really think- however, David Nevue gets "it", he is an example of someone who is using the Internet to promote his music in best way he can - using the medium to cut past time and space - which is what the internet can do.

I’ll see if I can catch a performace of David Nevue in December in NYC.
