Google Slow Loading Page Penalty
may explain a lot of why certain sites and blog networks have been hit with a pagerank penalty - it's the infrastructure too.
I suspected as much a while back when I heard Google talking about the difficulties of crawling sites and how they'd prefer content to be near to the root directory than father down the directory tree.
But why would the care if it was just a matter of a couple extra links/paths to transverse? It meant time, time that is multiplied by the billions of sites they have to crawl ... and now they are rewarding fast loading sites and penalizing those that load slower.
No surprise - but now it's confirmed.
