Micro Blogging

Micro Blogging seems to be talking hold via Twitter according to Steve Rubel.  While I haven't been doing it much myself, many other bloggers are in love with Twitter and similar types of applications. Your Guide to Micro-Blogging and Twitter by MediaShift defines Micro Blogging:

"…Micro-blogging allows you to write brief text updates about your life on the go, and send them to friends and interested observers via text messaging, instant messaging, email or the web. The most popular service is called Twitter , which was developed last year and became popular among techno-gurus at the 2007 South by Southwest Conference in Austin, Texas. Part of the magic of Twitter is that it limits you to 140 characters per post, forcing you to make pithy statements on the fly."

"….To get started, you can register for a free Twitter account or a free Jaiku account online. With both services, you can upload a photo of yourself and make your micro-blog private or public. As when using all social networking services, be careful what you are willing to share with the public when it comes to your location and what you’re doing."

Also, Jeremiah Owyang says the term “MicroMedia” is taking hold :

"…Yesterday I tried to define what tools like Kyte, 3Jam, Facebook Video, and Twittergrams are. They’re bite sized versions of media, and often have mobile and social media hooks. Read about MicroMedia."

"..Mobile devices are getting better at capturing video and audio. Some Nokia phones have 5 megapixel cameras in them. On board cameras are becoming standard for most laptops, and I’ve several webcams I can access at anytime. Like most online media and ways we communicate, we start with text, go to audio, and then evolve to Video, the same applies to the Micro channel. So what’s new? MicroMedia. What’s the definition of Micromedia here’s mine:

[MicroMedia: Quick audio or video messages published to a trusted social community. May be created and consumed using mobile technology, and often distributed using other social media tools, listen to this example.]

One thing that's happening is Micro Blogging is spawning Micro Audiences of friends who are often the only people who can see the Micro Blogging and MicroMedia.
So…that's the reason that Steve Rubel is posting less - he doesn't need to post to his blog as much.  I'm just wondering if Micro Blogging can be monetized at all (it does not seem to be the same opportunities as regular blogging to run Blog Advertising - but maybe there are other possibilities, like sponsorship.
Just a thought.

This is a great article! I think Twitter has a great future in Web 2.0. It has teen appeal, it’s easy to use, and it’s kind of like a train wreck - you just can’t help but look. I wrote a blog post about Twitter and Enterprise 2.0 you might be interested in here. Let me know what you think.
