iPhone Review

iPhone Review: After listening to Walt Mossberg's iPhone video Review it's pretty clear what the iPhone's strengths and weaknesses are.  I'd probably buy one based on what I'm seeing and hearing  - the big question is not if, but when.  Do I buy one now or wait a year?

As a blogger - based on the iPhone Reviews I've read and written so far: I'd like one today - yet…. based on the other things I've been hearing, which I'll briefly go over here - I'd advise to wait till later on this summer, or later this year.   First of all, there's no need to rush and buy one (next year you can bet there will be an "iPhone 2" or "iPhone Plus" released …by the way, so waiting to buy an iPhone does not hurt you yet.

Among the things I've learnt over the last week are:

    • TechCrunch reports - After speculation earlier in the week that Apple had sold between 400-500,000 iPhones, the actual new sales figures for the iPhone are even wilder than earlier figures: Apple and AT&T moved 700,000 iPhones to the close of business Sunday. "…Based on the cost of manufacturing an iPhone (see post July 2), Apple would have made a profit of between $200million and $266 million in 3 days (not including marketing costs), on sales somewhere between $350million and $420million, significantly more than earlier estimates of Apple having a $300million weekend."
    • I wrote a post on iPhone Tools inspired by Read/WriteWeb's coverage that covers how iPhone Tools expand Apple's influence to social networks and Search.
    • Also, I'm thinking that my Paris Trip might have had even better coverage than I provided had I had a functioning iPhone with me.  Oh well, next time I go to Paris, it's with an iPhone.

A couple of other things: Celebrities  like Clay Aiken are already blogging from the iPhone:

Clay Aiken just got an iPhone and are blogging from it, so I'm told. I guess the great web interface makes it a must for bloggers like me.  Alot of CEO's are waiting on line too..and buying iPhones, and I covered that in SmartMobs yesterday in iPhone Mania - new line of the Have's and the Have nots - I even added a live Video Feed on June 29th just before the iPhone became available (but we had to take it down as it was tying up the blog too much)..

Honestly I don’t see the iphone as being as groundbreaking as some people seem to think. The interface is seems nice,I will give it that,it still doesn’t seem to be as good as a real keyboard, but we will soon see.
My samsung a920 has played mp3 files for a year and a half. It doesn’t integrate with itunes like the iphone does, but I have been using it as my mp3 player in my car for over a year and a half and it works great. My real problem isnt the MP3 capability or the interface however. That all looks ok. The MP3 capability promises to have a much smoother interface both on your pc and on the phone, and the user interface could certainly be to many peoples liking. The real problem here is the internet connectivity.
They are advertising this thing as “the real internet”. What they are not telling you is that its the real internet at dial up speeds. Thats right, dial up. The I-phone uses the same technology that my old Siemens s45 used almost 8 years ago. My samsung a920 on the other hand uses EVDO. EVDO gives me about 1Mbps. (its burst speed is higher, but thats the sustained number) In fact,it works so well,I have had my DSL disconnected and use only my cell phone for internet. You cant receive calls while online but that will be fixed with rev a later this year, and it will be faster too.
AT&T has something similar. Its called HSPDA. Im told that its even better than EVDO,even better in fact than EVDO rev a according to some. That begs the question, why on earth did they use obsolete technology on a phone that claims to give you the real internet, when AT&T has a 3.5G network. I don’t care how good the interface is,or how easy it is to transfer MP3 files to the phone. Until they come up with an I-Phone that can connect to the internet as well as my year and a half old a920,the I-Phone,and its “real internet” remain a joke.

BizofShowBiz author Gary Bourgealt discussed the recent promise by Sen. John D. Rockefeller to submit legislation for the regulation of "violent, indecent, and profane" content on television. I personally would never vote for such legislation…

I read somewhere that Jobs said that the reason for going with EDGE was that 3G drained the battery too fast. He also said something about the size of the components.

It will be interesting to see what network the iPhone will be available on here in Australia. Coverage is a big issue here.

Sicko, by Michael Moore is also premiering at the same time the iPhone is now available - I wonder if the two are linked, if nothing else, by timing.  I did my iPhone Review and have been getting close to a…

I use the travel lot, so I can’t use same network in other countries. If I go for roaming that would be very expensive comparing local service providers. So sim lock is NOT ACCEPTABLE. Is this legal in Australia??

When we look back at 2007 the biggest story, technology wise, will probably be iPhone Review but … a story almost as significant will go almost unnoticed - a leapfrog effort by Yahoo! Advertising to create truly online customized ads based…

It’s true, the iPhone could be a useful tool for blogging. In fact, first thing I did after buying mine was post to my blog :).

But the iPhone’s still got some issues I think Apple needs to work out. So it might be worth waiting a little to buy one.

One issue I’ve had a couple times lately is that the sliders (”Slide here to unlock” and “Slide here to answer”) have malfunctioned and not detected my touch. I restarted the phone and that issue is resolved for now, but we’ll see how it goes.

I posted a full iPhone review with pros & cons on my blog. Hope it helps you make your decision.

Cheers,
Chris

Well… I have to admit that I know nothing much yet about the iPhone's Tools, yet I was able to get the number one listing in Google for it!  That's the first position out of 150 Million pages that are…

Another week is ending and the flurry of news continues. Here's what the Know More Media authors have been discussing over the last couple of weeks. Apple made big buzz with the unveiling of the iPhone 3G:3G iPhone: July 1th…
