Scruples about Online Reputation Management

There are some jobs that I'm not that comfortable with. Over the last couple of days I was asked to write a proposal to get rid of a negative listing(s) on an individual; also a legal filing in the first page of Search Results.

So here's a way to connect in my painting about Google this weekend.  If what Google says about a person (via search results) is Google's Truth about the person ... and that "truth" becomes the most visible part of their online reputation how much can we or even should be try to correct those results, especially if there's a legal finding?

I don't know the answer.  But I do know there's probably several doctors who have judgements from botched medical procedures they have performed - but you don't read all about it in Google.

Everyone makes mistakes and yet I find, in this case, I'm not sure if we should try to correct what Google says (get the offending URLs knocked down past the 3rd page of search results by creating a lot of good content that ranks higher).

Now that content is pasted into other blogs and even blog comments are indexed - it's really hard....very hard to manage.   I'm not even saying that it can't be done - it can.   I don't want to make it seem harder than it is - managing even a case like this one is doable.

I'm just not sure it should be done if there's a legal judgement involved.  Maybe the Search Engine is doing it's job by showing the negative judgment on the individual, and others should know it before having dealings with that person.

But let's say, in this case, we get a lot of good coverage from other bloggers in the persons area of expertise - we still cant' control all the comments that others may make on blogs, which can magnify the problem this individual already has.

I'd be curious to hear what others have to say about this kind of situation.

Hi Marshall,

I was participating in Rand Fishkin’s presentation today, at SES Munich, about Reputation Management - where he gave one memorable quote about how one could “easily” manage your online reputation. If we shortly agree that Google’s first 10 results is a major part in that.

USE SOCIAL NETWORK PROFILES!

Checking for “Dennis R. Mortensen” – ME :-) you will find:

LinkedIN (Profile Page)
SEOmoz (Profile Page)
Ecademy (Profile Page)
Blogger (Profile Page)
eMarketing (Profile Page)

Discounting my own blog and a Webmasterworld comment – there is nothing but profile pages on page 1. Amazing; perhaps I should sign up for a couple other networks and get “control” over the last two result :-)

Cheers

N.B.
What is the above Apple TV comment about??? :-)

It's like any other case for a SEO where he wants to remain ethical. If the client is selling rep*li*cas, ugly pr0n or weapons it's not ethical by definition, even if you use ethical optimization methods.
