Before starting, Jason McDowell of MarketingShift.com and one of his partners, Eric, introduced themselves to me. We talked for about 10 minutes - I've been reading MarketingShift for a while and like the bog.
And now, getting to the beginning of AlwaysON NYC:
We grew up as part of the PC generation - Microsoft was on a mission to put a PC on every desk. Now we have a new generation in charge - the IM Generation - they are now in charge. Tony just got back from Davos - a crazy place where 1200 people converge.
Tony (Anthony) Perkins is showing footage of Davos and it's all about Claudia Schrieffer (hope I'm spelling here name right). Actually, the footage that's being shown is pretty funny! Also, I'm on my second drink - so it's not hard to make me laugh.
Peter Hirshberg, chairman of Technorati, spoke next. Peter said that we need to look at media today with the eyes of a twelve year old. It's all about the audience and this is the year of "You" with a trailer called "Day of the LongTail".
If you think about the role of the audience - it's really the audience as Impresario and producer. There are 57 million blogs today and he showed a chart of the number of blog posts per day. If Web 1.0 is pages, Web 2.0 is people.
We're moving away for being defensive about Social Media to be activists about Social Media. Control is very 20th Century (ClueTrain Manifesto - Markets aer conversations and you have to engage with it).
Is giving up control and letting people play with your brand a form of Engagement? (Coke and Mentos - both sponsored ads). Makeupalley - Crowdsourcing - Technorati - hook up a brand with communities.
Technorati - Ogilvy - announcement - Carla Hendra -Co Chief Executive Officer, Oglivy.
The Shoe Shine Man, Kevin, in Grand Central - an Oracle of New Media (several clips).
New Technorati Change - any changes in the news that anyone can vote on - let the audience curate.
Now I'll get into the AlwaysOn Awards in the next post.
