So Google is now worth more money than IBM. Duh! A company that's only existed 10 years, with 1/30th the number of employees of IBM is now considered more valuable than Big Blue. I guess that also means that each worker at Google is more than 30 times more productive, in terms of worker value, than an IBM'er.
Of course, that's not really an accurate description - workers are individuals - but overall, the comparison can be made - is a Google worker worth 30 IBM'ers? Maybe it's true, but I'm not an economist, just a Web Analyst and an Artist. According to VentureBeat
Google, the giant search engine in Mountain View, is about to surpass Cisco to become the valley’s most valuable company.
It has passed IBM to become the third most valuable technology company, behind Cisco and Microsoft. Google’s stock is above $475 per share, bringing its total market worth ($475 x total number of shares) to $145 billion, surpassing the total value of IBM at 139.5 billion. Now it is breathing down the neck of Cisco, which has a value of $147.5 billion.
Working for IBM I can't really be objective - but what if a worker at Google, spending 20% of their time doing what no one told them to do .... is way more productive than your average IBM'er? What if..... What if Google's sloppy management style is actually much more successful for today's realities than IBM's stoggy matrix style of management? What if... small is the next big? What ..... what then? We're about to see.
