![]() Google Analytics for Blogs (and other stuff too) – part 1 (setting it up) - this instruction and interview came about because of the Emetrics Summit and so I've tagged it that way.
I interviewed Nick Mihailovski and analytics specialist for Google Analytics and Justin Cutroni, Director of Analytics for EpikOne, INC on how to set up Google Analytics for a blog (which also applies to general sites). I know many several people that are having problems setting up Google Analytics for A Blog.
Before I go forward I want to state that Google Analytics is a more powerful web analytics tool than IBM SurfAid is today, at least, prior to it’s acquisition by Coremetrics. It’s also true that most people will not know how to use the GA to get the most out it.
Because Google Analytics is now a free product – people often, mistakenly, believe they can do every possible thing with Google Analytics all themselves, and while that’s possible, many more will benefit far more by having a channel partner set up your Google Analytics – Google has a few channel partners such as EpicOne and RevolutionROI.
The first step is to login to your google account (or create one if you don’t have it)
Get the tracking code and put it just before the closing “body” tag near the bottom of the source code of your blog template.
<script src="http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js" type="text/javascript">
</script>
<script type="text/javascript">
_uacct = "UA-817713-1";
urchinTracker();
</script>
</body>
</html>
Note: if your putting Google Analytics on your entire site – you need to put the tracking code on every page of your site that your going to track – since we’re talking about a blog here….just the bottom of your blog template will be all that’s required.
For the purpose of this post, I’ll work with My Metrics Diary.
You may have to wait a couple of hours till you see data being collected.
Next post – I’ll show you what you can do with Google Analytics
