Andrew Goodman spoke to John Marshall, CEO of ClickTracks and asked him if Google Analytics has hurt their business? According to Andrew"
" think one thing Clicktracks' success might underline, actually, is that their growth occurred because they were nimbler and cheaper than many competitors. They actually grew because they competed on price as well as features and service. So is it so wrong to speculate that if Google takes it a step further, and drops the price to zero, they might accelerate that trend? Perhaps not, because "free" is in a different category in the marketplace altogether. Products don't have to be free to offer exceptional value."
To me, something that's free is in a different category - period. Google Analytics is a great product that you don't have to pay for - but people still need help with it and if they think it's a free product - they may think everything can be done by the person - reducing overhead. If anything - I think making GA free limits how people might decide to deploy it.

I started using the new Google Analytics on a few of our sites on Tuesday just to see, and not only is data collection almost instant (well, actually about 2-3 hours behind) but as someone who used to pay $5-$198/domain for Urchin (depending on whether it was version 5 or 6, and how is was licensed), I’m absolutely thrilled with the fact that it’s free.
