Google is already in NYC; according to SEOROUNDTABLE and a thread in Webmasterworld, Google will occupy a large part of 111 Eighth Avenue as both a workplace and datacenter.
‘Eustace left out the part about the 300,000 square feet of space that Google plans to occupy in the heart of the city. It’s a poorly kept secret that the company will soon open a huge new office and networking facility at 111 Eighth Avenue. Google’s new base in the city will dump a sizable influx of Google employees into the social and professional environment of Chelsea and the West Village."
I have walked by 111 Eighth Avenue and been in the building before - I recall it’s an old phone building or port authority…hmm…makes sense. Of all the types of buildings you’d chose to house a datacenter in, a phone building is the perfect fit as most had a lot of space.
Personally, I get a good feeling on this news - if it’s true. It would be a great help to Chelsea - which already has much of the NY Art World located in it (if you want to know more, see my ArtNewYorkCity.com blog)
