Avinash Kaushik is too good to me - or maybe it’s Technorati - or maybe it’s Know More Media - as www.webmetricsguru.com is now been named the Top Web Analytics Blog by Avinash Kaushik for July 06.
As we’ve seen last month, measuring popularity is tricky and there’s no one really doing it, that I know of, besides Avinash Kaushik on Occam’s Razor.
Last month everyone on Avinash’s list got a lot of flack from Eric Peterson (who wasn’t on the list then - I suppose that must have miffed him all the more). The fact is, there’s no perfect way to measure this kind of thing but if you really wanted to try to do it, Comscore might be able to do it just as they have rated Blog Traffic the other day and which I posted about in The Popularity of Blogs - according to Comscore.
Problem is, Comscore is not going to bother to measure this (but as I don’t have access to their rating system I can’t say for sure) and they’d go after the number of visitors in millions and I don’t think any of the blogs, or all of them on the list, collectively would get even one million visitors a year. So we have a niche category that is not going to be measured the same way sites like myspace.com is.
And so we go back to Technorati - and for all it’s pros and cons, what Avinash has done is come up with a list that is as reasonable an assessment of top Web Analytics blogs as he can make it. The fact that it’s not perfect or that some don’t think it’s even accurate does not mean his list is invalid - his list is very valid based on the tools he has to work with.
I suppose we can try to get HitWise to measure the top Web Analytics Blogs (if they even have a category or segment for that)- but we’ve seen what often happens when HitWise gets involved - just the other day between Myspace.com and Yahoo Mail - all that did is get HitWise DIGGED, but aroused a lot of questions and objections.
In other words, when HitWise is involved, they also want to get BUZZ out of anything they publish (that’s why the place information on the HitWise Blog) and they may go after a story that’s interesting (in order to get more BUZZ) but do they really want to report on the estimated traffic of Top Web Analytics Blogs and which ones are on the top?

And Avinash also mentions what changed since June:
So what’s changed?
- There is a new #1, congratulations Marshall (with the power of KMM you are going to be hard to beat buddy : )
- The collective analytics community is making good progress in the blogosphere, all of us progressed forward in our ranking
- Clint gets the fastest mover of the month award, congrats Clint!
Yes, the power of KMM as a blog network does help, but I also post a lot and try to make everything I talk about relate to Web Analytics in some way - sorta widens the scope. If your just going to post about conversion rates and pageviews - it’s going to be hard to post that much - I needed to go past that point and I have - I also comment about Search Behavior, Buzz, even Art (if there’s metrics there).
Now I’m going to Celebrate … later.
