I have often run into the same issue Seth Godin wrote about today about intuition vs. analysis. I usually try to go with my intuition and my approach to Web Analytics is just about 100% intuitive and right brained.
Re-framing Seth Godin’s argument (if we can call it that - maybe conundrum is better) there is always some left brain activity mixed in with the right brain activity - no one can be 100% one or the other. Same thing with making decisions - even when someone does make an intuitive decision - they are still using the left brain (it is not just a right brain activity). I think the difference is not so much intuition vs. analysis conundrum or right brain vs. left brain but the way both sides, right and left interact and the rhythm of interaction.
In every intuitive decision that Seth mentions in his post - there is also reason involved - intuition did not, by itself, do all the work.
"Who Moved My Cheese was unsound. So was publishing a book two years after you started blogging every chapter. So was an expensive, unfitted, almost untailored suit from Milan. So was running against Joe Lieberman."
Intuition guided these efforts and they may not have seemed "reasonable" or "status quo" at the time - but there was reason involved - it was just reason working at a higher level. Lets call it a higher frequency right-left brain interaction and leave it at that.
"The challenge is not to somehow persuade those in search of soundness to change their minds. The challenge is to do enough of a gut check to decide whether you should defend your instinct. And then do it."
Once you get with the higher frequency right-left brain (intuition vs. analysis) your done convincing anyone - all you need to do is convince yourself - your seeing something they can not yet see (that’s why it appears unreasonable - un -status-quo - or un-analytical).
BTW, I speak about my Right Brained, Intuitive Approach to Web Analtytics and SEO here. The Podcast is accessible via iTunes only so you’ll need that on your PC or MAC - too bad they did not make it an mp3 file (can’t complain for my first Podcast Interview); also you’ll need to listen to about 7 minutes of a regular featured article before I come on and speak. If anyone has any comments/thoughts about the podcast, after listening to it, please contact me.
