Why I don’t have comments - comments not allowed on Seth Godin’s blog

Posted by Marshall on June 03, 2006 | Link It

Seth Godin does not want to hear from me!   Seth Godin does not want his mind cluttered with his readers’ opinions.   I don’t blame him; if he feels he has to read and listen to all comments - he’d not be free to write anything.

I think comments are terrific, and they are the key attraction for some blogs and some bloggers. Not for me, though. First, I feel compelled to clarify or to answer every objection or to point out every flaw in reasoning. Second, it takes way too much of my time to even think about them, never mind curate them. And finally, and most important for you, it permanently changes the way I write. Instead of writing for everyone, I find myself writing in anticipation of the commenters. I’m already itching to rewrite my traffic post below. So, given a choice between a blog with comments or no blog at all, I think I’d have to choose the latter.

So, bloggers who like comments, blog on. Commenters, feel free. But not here. Sorry.

One blogger weighed in on Seth Godin’s not allowing comments on his own blog.

"I respect Seth’s POV—but I don’t think this is consistent with the marketing principles that he evangilizes.  So, I’m taking him off my blogroll.  For authenticity—please see Jaffe Juice

That was just after Seth Godin experimented and let comments on his blog - but just for one post about getting traffic to your blog.

I think Seth Godin should allow comments - and just not read them!

I’ll bite, just like the many, many, many other people who have chomped down on this rotten grape. But I’m not going to chew and spit out the same story. Thanks to Techmeme for all the sources. Look, if Seth Godin doesn’t want comments, that’s fine, do…

I don’t think is a big deal… if one wants to reply to somebody’s blog then one can do it in it’s own blog. I myself have done it, even to reply to Seth’s posts. I think that in this way “conversations” in the blogosphere become more open and less local.

I think comments are great. I love to get them and I love to make them (when I have something to say). But if Seth feels as though they would take over his life, I can respect that. The “conversation” is 24/7. I love it and love to plug in as much as possible - but if you have the personality that hates to miss anything you’d go crazy. Maybe Seth just knows his own limitations and it isn’t a reflection on his audience!?!?

Part 1: Know your goals There was a big “hoopla” over at Seth Godin’s blog yesterday. He posted an entry about how to build traffic on your blog. It was filled with contradictions. Seth seems to be a pretty smart
