HitWise gets data that's probably the most accurate picture of search and website traffic you can get today. For example, many people would like to know how much actual web traffic a site gets and how it gets it (esp if it's a competitor's site). HitWise's numbers may not be 100% accurate - but they are close enough to give a clear idea of the traffic to any number of sites, where it comes from, the keywords used to drive traffic and the demographics of each site.
HitWise can also provide overall statistics on online search engine usage and here's search traffic usage numbers that Bill Tancer of HitWise provided recently; I've met Bill Tancer a couple of times at various Search Engine Strategies and WebmasterWorld Conferences.
Bill Tancer writes: "By popular demand, I've gone through several Hitwise categories to compile the table below that shows where Google, Yahoo! and MSN properties stack up in their respective categories. The percentages represented in the right hand column are the percentages of visits in respect to visits to that category.
I think Yahoo Mail! is the killer. When I looked at many home builder referrals to one of my main house plans architectual clients I found many referrals originated from Yahoo Contextual Ads in Yahoo Mail!.
