Cuban Hates Me - Blog Marketing Experiment Gone Good

Posted by Marshall on April 21, 2006 | Link It

Pretty interesting post; I was at WMW too but missed talking with Jim Kukral; he tried an experiment last week to get Mark Cuban’s attension via blogging.

Phase 1 Of How To Get Mark Cuban To Hate You Too

I created a blog called www.markcubanpleasecallme.com. The blog had a very simply message. Read the blog for the entire release.

"This is a first of its kind blogging experiment," said Mr. Kukral. "I want to see if I can use a quickly made blog and some inexpensive blog promotion techniques to get a person like Mark Cuban to notice me, and actually call me." The point of this blogging experiment is to further prove the power of of instant publishing/blogging as an effective method of promoting your business online.

The blog was launched on Monday, April 10. Nobody knew of the blog except me.

OK, we start with a simple blog that no one knows about.

Phase 2 Of How To Get Mark Cuban To Hate You Too

I wrote a press release for distribution on PRweb.com. Here is a link to the release that went out on April 12. I paid the $80 entry level for the release.

Within 4 hours of the release going out, I had several independent blogs pick up on the story and write about it, tracking back to the press release and my blog. Then, that afternoon, a call came in from a reporter at the Dallas Morning News wanting to interview me for a story on my experiment. Bingo!

So far, this seems pretty simple to do.

We did the interview and all was well. An hour later, I get a call back from the reporter who drops a bombshell on me.

"Jim, I wanted you to know I just spoke to Mark Cuban via email, which he prefers, and he told me basically that he hates you, and he will never call you."

What???? Mark Cuban hates me? He didn’t even know who I was an hour ago. How can this be???

The reporter continued to tell me that "Mark said you’ve been writing him and pestering him for a long time now and you should get a life and he’ll never call you and to go away."

Obviously, Mark had me confused with someone else. As it turns out, we discovered there is another person out there who has in fact been hassling Mr. Cuban for some time with emails and such. We found this out through comments on my blog and through trackbacks. The reporter agreed to include this discovery and my reaction in the article, which can be found here (free reg required). Note: The story ran 3-days after release was sent.

This experiement had legs of it’s own.

Phase 3 Of How To Get Mark Cuban To Hate You Too

So here I am at WMW, about 6-days after the release went out, talking to the founder of PRweb.com at his booth. I tell him my story and he asks me if he can showcase my story in his presentation the following day at the show. Of course, I agreed. He also upgraded my press release to the $200 level and we recorded a podcast on the story for re-release soon, no link yet.

Like I said, I missed meeting Jim but I suspect I was standing right next to him at the bar in the Shreadon Boston Hotel Wednesday night.

Can’t this at least partially be attributed to the power of a Press Release as opposed to Blogging?
